In the grand tradition of Champagne and Cognac , France can claim to be responsible for the invention of absinthe thanks to Dr. Pierre Ordinaire, a Frenchman living in exile in Switzerland , in 1792.
Legend has it that the locals may have distilled drinks very similar to absinthe previously (allegedly for medicinal purposes), so it may be best to call it a dead-heat between France and Switzerland.
