The Swiss can claim joint responsibility with the French for the invention of absinthe, given that Dr. Pierre Ordinaire, a Frenchman, was living in Switzerland at the time.
However while the French commercialized absinthe across the world, the Swiss preferred to keep their absinthes to themselves. As a land-locked nation, the Swiss never had a navy, or the shipping interests of other European nations, but we suspect it was their love of the Green Fairy that prevented their exporting it!
